What is a Siyum Sefer Torah?

A Siyum Sefer Torah, Also known as a Hachnasat Sefer Torah, is an event celebrating the inauguration of a new Torah in town. It begins at the home of the one dedicating the Torah, where the scribe completes the final letters with family, friends and community members. Once the Torah is complete, there is a parade from the home of the one dedicating the Torah, to the Shul where the Torah will remain. The Torah parade is joined by the entire community and the new Torah is escorted in the most honorable way with song and dance to its new home.

Who makes a Siyum Sefer Torah?

While it is incumbent upon every Jew to write a Sefer Torah, most people can not take upon themselves the financial burden. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, proposed that all Jews join together by purchasing a letter in a “collective” Torah scroll, expressing our inherent unity.

Why is a Siyum Sefer Torah such a large celebration?

A Siyum Sefer Torah is the celebration that centers around the welcoming of a Torah to its new home. In fact, the entire town skips Tachanun that day in celebration. Often times, the new Torah is dedicated in memory or in honor of a family or community member.

Do we need a Torah truck if we are only marching one block?

When Dovid Hamelech brought up the Aron with the Luchos, Dovid and all the Yidden danced and sang with great joy and with the sounding off the shofar. Other Gedolim write, its important to celebrate in the streets to share the simcha with the community and to encourage others to perform this great Mitzvah. At Crown Torah Truck, we help coordinate all event details according to the community.
